Don't Get Funkified!

It’s just another day at McKinley High and the Glee kids are happy, because they apparently have a chance at winning Regionals against Vocal Adrenaline, until… well, let the funk battle begin:

Vocal Adrenaline calls New Directions into the Auditorium and they perform Another One Bites The Dust. The McKinley kids are already desperate and when they return to their choir room, they see that Vocal Adrenaline converted it into a toilet paper jungle.

Finn and Puck slash the tires of the Range Rovers of all 26 members of Vocal Adrenaline. Their punishment: An almost-expulsion from school and having to work at Sheets-N-Things to pay for the damage. Will - finally released from the bonds of his “Terri”-ble marriage and struggling with funk himself - comes up with the week’s assignment of performing funk songs to express their emotions. Vocal Adrenaline did never do a funk number, so this might be something to throw them off track. The kids prepare their big final number at the end of the week with several funky performances:
  • Thanks to Sandy, who misses his shopping music, Puck and Finn imaginarily sing Loser at work, together with the other staff members of Sheets-N-Things.
  • Quinn performs It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World together with other pregnant girls. I find, her voice fits very good to this song.
  • Puck, Finn and Mercedes rap a funny Good Vibrations and we can enjoy, that Finn has done his homework and practiced his dance steps.
At the same time, Will has his own funk battle against Sue: Thanks to Rachel’s ending of her relationship with Jesse, he has the idea of doing the same to his nemesis: Pretending to love her and then rip her heart out. A first success is achieved by his rendition of Tell Me Something Good, that gets Sue into the right mood. Well, of course it worked at first, but Will - in contrast to Sue - is too indulgent to let the cheerios suffer from Sue’s absence due to lovesickness. So in the end, the cheerios win their National trophy, which is installed in a bullet-proof case in New Directions’ choir room as a sign of Will’s failure.

Jesse calls Rachel to meet him at the parking lot, where the Vocal Adrenaline members throw eggs at her. After short hesitation and a last “I loved you”, he cracks his egg on her forehead. Puck and the other guys want revenge but Will tells them, it won’t help to make their pain go away and they have to find another solution.

So they perform Give Up The Funk in front of Vocal Adrenaline, whose members are shocked by their talent and New Directions succeeded in making them funkified in return. If I was in a rival club and didn’t love this performance so much, I sure would get the chills, too. But for now, I only get the chills, when I think of the next episode…

So what do you think? In my opinion, this battle ends up in a tie between Vocal Adrenaline and New Directions! Let’s see, who’ll win at Regionals!
