Meet the Parents -- Glee Edition

In light of the Molly Shannon and Neil Patrick Harris announcements, I've been thinking about what guest stars I might like to see grace the halls of William McKinley High.  There are lots of great Broadway-TV crossover actors that I think would be great, although, they would need a good reason to be on the show.

I really enjoyed the story lines that featured parents.  In "Acafellas," I loved the ever-talented Victor Garber as Will's papa, providing fatherly advice to his confused (and gorgeous) son.  We, of course, saw glimpses of Kurt's protective and supportive dad in "Preggers."  I especially loved watching Kurt's interaction with his father in light of the revelation about his sexuality.  Then of course, there was the plot-changing episode, "Ballads," in which we met Quinn's conservative parents.

There are parents that we've seen glimpses of, such as Puck's and Finn's moms.  And there are parents that we've heard about incessantly (namely, Rachel's two dads that are very friendly with the ACLU).

But there are two sets of parents that I would really like to meet.  And I know the perfect people to play them!

Mercedes' Mama and Papa:  Mercedes is a very interesting character.  There seems to be more behind her diva-ness than just her voice.  Perhaps if we met the people that raised her, we would better understand why she is the way she is.

People to play them:  Vanessa Williams and Jesse L. Martin.  With the recent cancellation of Ugly Betty, Williams will be without a place to call home.  And imagine the diva-off!!  I can see Williams now, combing Mercedes' hair while discussing ways her daughter might steal the solo from Rachel.   Add in Jesse L. Martin (from Broadway's Rent and TV's Law and Order) as the doting father/dentist and you have two great parents with two great voices raising one fantastic singer.

If Vanessa Williams wasn't available however, I would also consider Audra McDonald (from Private Practice) for the role.

Artie's Mother:  We heard in "Wheels" that Artie's mom was in the car crash but wasn't hurt, whereas Artie was.  The relationship there is probably very caring and sweet, tinged with some guilt.  It is a relationship that in my opinion is worth examining to give some background in to Artie's life.  It would also be awesome to see a duet between Artie and his mom, especially if he indeed does get closer with a certain young Gleek and needs dating advice.

Person to play her:  Either Rebecca Luker (Broadway-fabulous) or Jane Krakowski (known from 30 Rock), both who can do serious but can also be humorous, if need be.

I'd also like to see Rachel's dads at some point, but I am still contemplating who to cast.  Do you guys have any suggestions?

  2. I want to see why Tina's last name is Cohen-Chang. I'm also curious about what kind of parents would let their daughter go on pretending to stutter for 3-4 years of her life!

  4. I wonder if the guy that played her real dad (we can tell which one is her real dad even if she can't) is actually the actress's father

And more about meet the parents: Idina Menzel is coming in to be in the back 9. Could her character possibly turn out to be Rachel's biological mother?

    Check it out: http://dailybrunch.files.wordpress.com/2009/12/0910_lea_idina.jpg

  5. yeah most tv shows put pictures on the pilot of character's only to actually cast (recast) with actors who will be really portraying them... as for me i've been imagining Anthony Rapp as one of Rachel's dads... taye diggs is amazing as well but he does have another show

  6. I think April Rhodes is going to turn out to be Rachel's mother. Check out Rhodes not taken when she is talking about her ex who cheated on her with a guy and her "set of mixed race twins". The age is right, they sign alike and it would be a really good story because it would really throw Rachel for a loop thinking that she was an accident and not planned. I think casting Idina is too obvious for Ryan.
