Character Profile: Kurt Hummel

Name: Kurt Hummel

Played By: Chris Colfer

Age: 16

Family:  Father, former football player and current auto garage owner; Mother died when he was six.  No siblings.

Kurt is fashionable and outspoken, with a love of makeovers, the Broadway show Wicked, and Beyonce's "Single Ladies."  He is very particular about his skin care, not ruining his Marc Jacobs jacket, and making sure that everyone is as "lady fabulous" as he.

His singing of the song "Mr. Cellophane" for his New Directions  audition is indicative of the fact that normally he feels transparent, as if people see right through him without acknowledging that he is even visible.  He has been a victim of hazing -- being shoved in the dumpster, having his lawn furniture nailed to his roof, and having pee balloons as well as random slushies thrown at him.

His sexuality is a point of conversation for his glee club friends.  He first came out to his gal pal Mercedes, after she professed her love for him.  He then came out to his dad after his success in the big game, although Mr. Hummel already knew he was gay. Even though Kurt was afraid to confirm to his peers that their perception of his sexuality is true, he is still very secure in who he is, not being afraid to start fashion trends (such as one including cornrows and many varieties of exotic bird feathers), slap his own butt in the presence of football players, and slushie-ing himself to "take one for the team."

We love Kurt because while he may feel invisible, he is very true to himself.  And also because he once wore a corset to second period.

Best Quotes:
"It's OK. My Dad took my baby away when he found my tiara collection in my hope chest." (Episode 3: Acafellas)

"Hello. My name is Kurt Hummel and I'll be auditioning for the role of kicker." (Episode 4: Preggers)

"Oh, Bambi. I cried so hard when those hunters shot your mommy." (Episode 5: The Rhodes Not Taken)

"I don't know why I find his stupidity charming. I mean, he's cheating off of a girl who thinks the square root of four is rainbows. I guess that's love for you." (Episode 10: "Ballad")

"You need something to distract from your horrible personality. Most of the time, I can't stand to be in the same room as you. Especially this one, which looks like where Strawberry Shortcake and Holly Hobbie come to hook up." (Episode 11: Hairography)

Neil Patrick Harris on Glee? Yes, Please!

My inner giddy prepubescent (who was once madly in love with Doogie Howser) is currently running around my brain in her Hammer pants squealing like an idiot. Neil Patrick Harris (cue scream) is going to guest star on Glee! ACK! For me, Neil trumps all the other guest spots that have been, or will ever be, on Glee. I used to get in trouble when I was kid for sneaking in episodes of Doogie Howser, M.D. when I was supposed to be in bed. I've followed NPH throughout his career (and now on Twitter) and now... he's going to... to... be on GLEE?........THUD.

That's right. An article posted on E! online confirmed the guest spot (the writer appeared to be just as excited as I am. Almost):

Remembering The Start of Glee: The Pilot

One of our contributing writers (who isn't on the staff page yet) wrote up her opinion on the Pilot of Glee.  With not a lot of news going on and still counting down until Glee's return in April, we hope that this article will help you remember how you felt when Glee began.  Enjoy!

Glee Pilot Rant & Review
By Sarina C.

After what felt like fifty years, the first episode of Glee finally aired! It did not disappoint. Now it's one of my must see shows.

Hey ladies, want to meet a man who’s chivalrous, has a respectable job and loves kids? Not to mention he’s just as fine as can be! I give you, Mr. Will Schuester. He’s the Spanish teacher/ former glee club member. Oh wait, he’s married to his obnoxious, materialistic wife Terri. Poor guy; rolling so contently onto the school parking lot with his muffler dragging. Dude must really love what he does because his salary clearly isn’t paying him well enough. On top of that, he’s doing detention for free just so he can stick around and do MORE WORK with the glee club? I have to say, I fell in love with him right away. He rescues poor Emma from a big nasty piece of chewing gum, (Her shoes in that scene were smokin’ hot!) and he’s working hard and willing to leave the job he loves in order to take care of the family he’s hoping to have someday. Oh, what a keeper! Fellas, take note: be like him.

He lists hockey and baseball as his favorite sports.

Went to his first Broadway show with Lea Michele when they were in New York.

Glee Goes To The White House

From the desk of Ausiello over at Entertainment Weekly:
Being the president’s wife apparently has its perks.

Sources confirm to me exclusively that First Lady Michelle Obama has invited the cast of Glee to perform at the annual White House Easter Egg Roll on Monday, April 5 — and, barring any last-minute glitches, they’re gonna do it!
Rumor has it Mrs. O and her daughters are big fans of the show. And since a White House gig is an offer that’s pretty darn hard to refuse, Glee’s producers did some lickety-split schedule rejiggering in order to honor the request.
The whole cast is tweeting their excitement!  I am just so excited to be sharing my city with the Glee cast.....I wonder where they'll be staying??

Meet the Parents -- Glee Edition

In light of the Molly Shannon and Neil Patrick Harris announcements, I've been thinking about what guest stars I might like to see grace the halls of William McKinley High.  There are lots of great Broadway-TV crossover actors that I think would be great, although, they would need a good reason to be on the show.

I really enjoyed the story lines that featured parents.  In "Acafellas," I loved the ever-talented Victor Garber as Will's papa, providing fatherly advice to his confused (and gorgeous) son.  We, of course, saw glimpses of Kurt's protective and supportive dad in "Preggers."  I especially loved watching Kurt's interaction with his father in light of the revelation about his sexuality.  Then of course, there was the plot-changing episode, "Ballads," in which we met Quinn's conservative parents.

There are parents that we've seen glimpses of, such as Puck's and Finn's moms.  And there are parents that we've heard about incessantly (namely, Rachel's two dads that are very friendly with the ACLU).

But there are two sets of parents that I would really like to meet.  And I know the perfect people to play them!

Fox Preview -- Analysis Time!

Ok, my fellow gleeks, in case you didn't see it before (like when Ashley posted it yesterday), watch this:

Now, that you've seen it, taken a cold shower after that hot HOT Wemma scene, let's discuss.

1) Does Matthew Morrison look like he has been working out a little too much?  Check out the scene towards the end with Sue.  Doesn't his neck area look thicker?  I kind of like Will to be a little on the leaner side.  Maybe the camera just adds 10 lbs?

2) Did you see Quinn in her Cheerios uniform?  I have been freeze-framing it during the Madonna cheer routine, and I was almost positive that I saw Dianna Agron in a Cheerios uniform.  Could it be?  Although the girl I saw didn't look a lick pregnant, so maybe it was just a Dianna Agron look-alike.

3) Ok, the scene where there are kids crouched on the floor and kids are jumping over them.  Was it me or was Jacob Ben Israel (played by the cute, yet creepy, Josh Sussman) one of those kids?  Does Jacob join Glee to be closer to Rachel?

4) Did you catch the second-long clip of Rachel kissing Jonathan Groff's yet-to-be-named character?

5) WEMMA!!!!!!! So much Wemma, I might die.  And then, when Terri walks around the corner......Oh. Ma. Goh.  I almost wet myself.

C'mon guys, what are your thoughts?  Am I just being totally crazy???

New Fox April Preview

This commercial was played during tonight's episode of American Idol and I almost lost my mind from the excitement. Try not to follow in my footsteps!

Trivia Tuesday: Mark Salling

Per the first suggestion on last week's post, Trivia Tuesday is dedicated to everyone's favorite bad boy, Mark Salling!

Mark's favorite TV shows are The Simpsons and Family Guy.

Mark also works as a painter and sketch artist.

Mark put out his first album in 2009 entitled "Smoke Signals" with his band Jericho in which he does the instrumentals as well as singing.
He can play the guitar, piano, bass and drums.

His favorite movie is Amadeus.  He says it was that movie that inspired to him to start piano lessons at the age of 5.

Loves Tex Mex food and his dog, Hank.

He enjoys playing basketball, frisbee (disc) golf and lifting weights.

He has an active love of birds and wildlife and volunteers with the James Hunter Wildlife Rescue charity.

Glee Inspires Seattle High School's Own "Will Schuester"

Greetings Gleeks! I found this great little article today in the Whidbey News-Times about Oak Harbor high school, located outside Seattle. One of their teachers, the absolutely adorable 25 year-old Darren McCoy, got approval from the school board to start their own Glee club after being inspired by the show.

At Home With Cory Monteith

I just stumbled upon a video that is bound to excite any Cory Monteith fan! Young Hollywood anchor Michelle Marie takes us on a tour of Cory's bachelor pad as he and his roommates are preparing for a barbeque.

I can't decide if I am drooling from the barbeque or from Cory in his natural habitat. You be the judge.

Back 9 Spoiler: Molly Shannon Joins Cast

From Kristin at E! Online:
Just when you thought Glee couldn't get any better...They go and cast Molly Shannon.
Seriously, Glee, stop stealing all the good already!
A show rep and inside sources confirm that the former Saturday Night Live funnylady is set to join Glee at the end of the season—but her character won't be jumping on the Cheerios train anytime soon.
Here's what we're hearing about Molly and her soon-to-be-nemesis, Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch)... Sources confirm that Molly will play "Brenda Castle, the busty 45-year old new astronomy teacher and badminton coach at McKinley High School who is both an alcoholic and a pill-popper." Word is, Molly's character will exchange a few vocal jabs with Sue Sylvester. (Shocker!)

I, for one, am excited to see Molly Shannon on Glee!  I was just watching her today in The Music Man, (where she appears with fellow Glee alum, Kristin Chenoweth) and boy, that girl can sing!

I am also excited that Ryan Murphy and co. are beginning to realize the importance of examining Sue's character...which I hope will happen now that they have cast her nemesis.  What makes Sue tick?  Does she have any real friends?

Are you excited?!

Singin' In The Rain

In December, Chris Colfer tweeted "I'm off to a photo shoot for Vanity Fair with the other gleek guys."  I for one wished I could have been a fly on the wall of the LA County Museum of Art where the shoot took place!  I always love to see my Glee man candy dressed up...so I was pumped that thanks to Socialite Life, I was able to see behind the scenes of this Singin' in the Rain-themed spread that is set to appear in Vanity Fair sometime this spring.

Most Romantic Love Song Ever!

Every Valentine's Day, BroadwayWorld.com compiles a list of answers (to a romantic-themed question) from hundreds of stars and industry professionals.  This year, on the 5th anniversary of this project, BroadwayWorld has gone above and beyond, bringing answers from more stars than ever...including many from the cast of Glee!

So, what is the most romantic love song ever, according to the Gleeks?

Trivia Tuesday: Lea Michele

Since there are 64 days until Glee returns, and we are all in various stages of withdrawal, I thought it might be fun to do a series on fun trivia bites about each cast member.  First up, Lea Michele!

Three of Lea's favorite clothing stores are Betsey Johnson, Intermix, and Barney's.

When Lea was rooming with Dianna Agron, they mothered a pair of adorable cats, Claude and Sheila.  When Lea moved out on her own, she got custody of the kitties, although "Dianna exercises visitation rights regularly," Lea is quoted as saying.

While in high school, Lea spent her downtime from Broadway working in a Bat Mitzvah dress shop, cleaning and vaccuming.

"One year for Mother's Day I got me and my mom tickets to go see Alanis Morissette. We both love her sooo much and we had the best time at her show. This year, I'm trying my hardest to somehow get Oprah over to Spring Awakening to see the show and introduce her to my mom. If I could pull that off, then all of my mother's dreams would come true."  Lea Michele, when starring in Spring Awakening.

Lea has seven known tattoos...

What Chris And Jayma Think Of Valentine's Day

Fox asked Chris Colfer and Jayma Mays what they like most about Valentine's Day.

Jayma Mays chose the heart-shaped candies with messages on them:

and Chris Colfer chose to talk about Single Awareness Day instead, where you watch horror movies with your other single friends:

What about you? What will you be doing this upcoming February 14?

Give Kendra A Song!

If you are anything like me, you love Kendra’s (Terri’s sister) unique brand of crazy and cunning. It is often hard to tell whether her ponytail is pulled too tight or she is under the influence of one too many rum-based drinks. But whatever the case may be, Kendra adds a definite lightness to the show unparalleled by any other character.

It comes as no surprise to me, then, that Jennifer Aspen, the delightful actress that plays Kendra, wants to be a part of all of this “singing and dancing nonsense” Glee is famous for. She has started tweeting under the name @GiveKendraASong (proven to be the real Jennifer Aspen) in hopes of getting some support!

So, to aid my dear Kendra (and Jennifer Aspen) in getting their wish, I have put together a list of songs that I think would be appropriate for Kendra to sing.Caveat here – these songs may not be in Ms. Aspen’s vocal range, nor may they have originally been sung by a woman. But this is my list. So back off.

The Importance Of The Piano Player

Dear Ryan Murphy --

First let me say thank you. Thank you for rekindling my love affair with television with your hit show, Glee. Thank you for reminding me, in this modern age of pop music drivel, that good music does exist and can sound better in 6 part harmony. And lastly, thank you for reminding me of how much fun I did indeed have those years ago when I was a part of high school show choirs.

Of course, I wasn't in the show choir. I was the piano player.

Top 5 Reasons to Love Brittany (With Video)

Hello faithful Gleeks. A few days ago, I covered the top five reasons to love Puck. Now, it's time to honor my favorite Cheerio, Brittany. Why do I love her? Well, to start, she's got less mama-drama than Quinn and she's not as snotty as Santana. And let's face it, once they actually let her speak, Glee's writers gave Brittany some of the *best* one-liners on the show. She might be dumber than a box of hair, but Brittany (played by Heather Morris) has a gift for deadpan delivery. Of course, just like Puck, one of the reasons I love Brittany has to do with the person playing her. Did you know Morris was once a backup dancer for Beyonce or that she was cut from the last season of So You Think You Can Dance? Read on...

"Atrocious" Audition Videos

If you've ever had an audition, you know that they are often nerve-wracking, soul-crushing experiences.  Your hands are sweaty, you can hardly swallow over that lump in your throat, and often times your performance is affected by this.

Fortunately for me, as an instrumentalist, auditions are usually behind a screen, meaning you could be playing your excerpts and scales in your pajamas and no one would care.  As long as you play perfectly.

But for TV and film stars, you have to look the part too.

While I really enjoyed the behind-the-scenes look at Lea Michele and Cory Monteith's auditons on the Glee DVD, I felt like something was missing. The rest of the cast perhaps?

Recently, I discovered some videos courtesy of People that give us a peek at the audition processes of Amber Riley, Chris Colfer, Kevin McHale, and Jenna Ushkowitz.  They say their hair was "atrocious". But their singing was spot-on. Probably why they got the jobs. I only wish I could audition as well as they can!

Slow Motion Gleeks

Cory Monteith just tweeted this video of the Glee cast moving in slow motion. Most of them are wearing Cheerios uniforms, what is going on?!

Is Cory Monteith Dating Taylor Swift?

They sure have been seen together a lot lately! The two were spotted having dinner together at Jerry’s Deli in L.A., and hanging out at Clive Davis' pre-Grammy party. According to this radio interview from Toronto's KISS 92.5, Cory and Taylor have "been on a few dates" and are "seeing where the road leads." She also wants to be a guest star on Glee. Don't get too excited yet though because Taylor just left for Australia, and who knows what could change while she's "down under."

What do you all think about this? Here are a few pictures of them together to help you decide.

Post-Grammy Dinner With Matthew Morrison

Matthew Morrison attended Antonio "L.A." Reid's Post-Grammy Dinner last night. The dinner was hosted by Jay-Z, and held at Cecconi's Restaurant in Los Angeles.

Jane Lynch Tells UK Daily Mirror: "I Didn't Want To Be Gay."

In a revealing January 31 interview in the UK's Daily Mirror, Jane Lynch revealed juicy details about her personal life, her upcoming singing scenes in Glee and even a few minor bombshells about her character, the egomaniacal, slightly deranged cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester.

Lynch, 49, who will marry her partner Lara Embry in May, had a hard time coming out to her parents. In fact, she waited until she was 31 to tell them she's gay.
