Chris Colfer Defies Gravity

It was no coincidence that Chris Colfer got to sing "Defying Gravity" on Glee. In fact, Ryan Murphy pulled this storyline directly from one of Chris' real-life experiences. That's one of the great things about Glee, the creators actually use a lot of real-life experiences in the storylines, that's why people relate to it so well. For example, Mark Salling was playing around on his guitar between takes and started singing "Sweet Caroline". Ryan liked it so much that he asked PJ Bloom to court Neil Diamond to get the rights to the song so they could add it in the show.

Chris Colfer was so excited when Ryan took his actual high school experience and wrote it in to the show. When Chris was in high school (which was just last year, he's the youngest in the cast at 19 years old), every year they would have a talent show and every year he begged to sing "Defying Gravity". Unfortunately, they never let him do it because the song is traditionally sung by a girl.

Well, Chris finally got his wish and sure showed his old high school! He does such a wonderful job singing this piece. I can imagine it took a lot of guts to belt that song out, it's a very difficult one!

Some other fun facts about Chris:
- he originally auditioned for the part of Artie
- he was the president of his high school writing club

In November there was a great article on Chris in New York Magazine. You can find it here.
