Hate On Me: Why Do Some People Complain So Much About Glee?

I actually didn’t get to see last night’s Britney Spears episode until about 10:00 because of a previous engagement.

But it was worth the wait, and I loved every minute.

However, I was surprised later when I went online and saw that a good majority of viewers didn't like the episode.

I’m not trying to tell anyone what to think about “Britney/Brittany”, but I certainly don’t think it deserved all the hate it got.

I laughed out loud during several parts of the episode, including Brittany revealing her trauma of being compared to Britney Spears because her name was “Brittany S. Pearce”. I also enjoyed Brittany’s determination to become the most talented member of the Glee Club and the assembly scenes with the “sex riot”.

I didn't even mind the recreation of the music videos. I grew up in the 90s and remember watching Britney videos, especially Baby One More Time, so seeing those with the Glee characters brought back memories of when I was younger.

When I’m not watching Glee, I do enjoy my share of serious shows that provoke discussion. I’ll check out episodes of “Law and Order: SVU” and I was a pretty big fan of “ER” for several seasons.

One of the reasons I love Glee is because it is a good chance to escape from reality. I have several of my own problems that I deal with on a daily basis. But when Tuesday night rolls around, I can’t wait to sit on the couch and watch a new episode of one of my favorite shows.

Why do some people expect every show to be dead serious and be totally perfect in plot execution or character development? Why can’t a show ever just be FUN? Why does every show have to be about how "intelligent" it is or whether or not it has some big mystery to follow?

If people are going to watch Glee, they should expect that they aren’t going to get the realism and outstanding plot development that they would get watching other shows on TV.

If someone can’t understand this, then I think they should stop watching the show. If they expect the same standard that a show like “Law and Order” would present, perhaps Glee isn’t the show for them.

And that’s fine. We all have different tastes, and the world would be boring if everyone liked the same things.

I’m not saying that every Glee episode is outstanding. It’s just that in my opinion, the good outweighs the not-so-good.

But if you’re just going to complain about the show, isn’t it better to not watch anymore than it is to continue watching and then moan about it every week?

However, if you are going to continue to watch Glee, just appreciate it for what it is. It's a great musical comedy that doesn't always make sense, but it's a great way to wind down and discover how to enjoy life again.

  1. My problem with the show is that the writers (esp. Ryan Murphy) seem to think the Glee is the greatest thing ever and everyone should respect it but the plot line is nearly non-existent now. The first 13 (though not perfect by any means) had actual plot and character development. And then, we got the back 9 which basically ruined Glee for me (I pretend those episodes don't even exist) since there was no development at all and flashy guest stars that had no purpose whatsoever. And plotlines that were basically pointless. It seems like the standard we fans once got has been completely thrown out the window in order for highly commercialized episodes that in the end mean nothing for the very little plot we do get (and just to get high ratings). I found that I enjoyed the Britney episode so much more without the music video remakes (not that I don't love Heather Morris, because she was awesome), the music should take a backseat to the episodes and it just seems to be the controlling factor, which isn't what I signed up for when I started watching the show.

Yes Glee is good for those nice little comfort moments, but in the end, it's still a television show. I love the characters and the actors and I think I'm mostly sticking around at this point because I'm hoping that maybe after one episode I can sit there and go "Yes, the writers finally got one right." It's been very long since I've been able to say that.

  2. I have to disagree with you on this one. If everyone remains silent and doesn't express their opinions about what they like or do not like, how will the writers and producers know why people are watching the show or not watching the show? Feedback is always important when it is honest. To pretend to like a show you didn't just means there is a better possibility you will see more of the same in the future. Expressing opinions constructively is perfectly American. Just my opinion, of course. I love Glee but am not a huge fan of the shows that focus on one artist's music...I prefer variety.

  3. Anon @ 5:29, the point I'm trying to make is that I don't think people should get so caught up in a plotline. Personally, there are other shows I can watch if I went a well developed plot. Why does it have to have one to keep you around? What is wrong with watching something mindless? Like I said, if that's not what you want, maybe you don't need to watch anymore.

  4. Ali,

I'm not saying that there's something wrong with watching something pointless. I watch all sorts of television shows, it's just so saddening and frustrating to have a show like Glee where they can hit such great strong storylines like Kurt coming out to his father or Finn having problems with his mother dating again or even Quinn who has all these subtle issues with her body and insecurity and then show up with an episode that just doesn't make sense. Am I saying every episode should be serious and dramatic? No. But for example, "Preggers" was a great episode. Kurt came out and the football players danced to single ladies which was possibly the most hysterical thing I'd ever seen. "Throwdown" made me laugh and cry. There was a balance to everything that isn't there anymore.

And I can watch and criticize anything I want--and clearly I'm not in the minority if I'm not the only one who wants a good plot. The writers take praise for bringing out serious topics like Kurt being gay or Artie being in a wheelchair and everyone says "look at what Glee's doing, that's so great bringing this awareness and showing the serious aspects of life" but the minute people criticize a point that brings up the 'campy' aspect, it's like 'well stop watching.' It just doesn't make sense to me.

  12. I have not missed a single episode of Glee and up until the beginning of this season, neither had my granddaughter. She loves the music and performance aspect of the show.

I am extremely disappointed in the direction the show has taken as far as sexual inuendo.

It's on at 8pm folks....family time. If you are going to continue with the more adult appropriate plot line, please....change the show to a different time slot.

Shame on you for ruining it for the younger fans!!!
