First let me say that I know you are a big TV/film wizard. I know that you have better things to do than listen to silly fans. But, I'm gonna say it anyway, 'cause thats how I roll.
I watched "Home" three times. The first time, I bawled my eyes out. The second time, I merely enjoyed it. And the third time, I was so bored, I surfed the internet for gardening tips and Weight Watchers recipes. I realize that a shift in tone is often needed to keep a show alive. And I appreciated this sudden dive into Depressing City. I liked how you focused on Kurt and Mercedes' inner struggles. And while I wasn't a huge fan of the musical selections, I appreciated the way they embraced the storyline.
And, I was actually really excited that Rachel didn't play a huge role in this episode. She has become annoying as of late, and I was glad I only had to hear one ridiculous line from her.
But I say this with love, Ryan, I really do -- for the love of everything that is holy, would you PLEASE stop letting your music supervisor RUIN a good thing?
Yes, I am a musician. And yes, I actually pay more attention to the music than the words, because really, sometimes the writing is so repetitve in nature, I want to poke my eyes out with a spoon.
But, there are several ways that whomever was in charge of the musical selections for "Home" basically ruined this episode for me, my also-musician husband, and my who-usually-watches-Glee-with-rapt-attention-but-didn't-this-episode baby.
1) Next time Kristin Chenoweth appears on Glee (and I know she will), PLEASE do not let her take the "white girl" note, as my friend calls it.
Now, I love Kristin Chenoweth as much as the next guy, and I realize that she probably has some stipulation in her contract that she MUST sing a high C in every episode she stars in, BUT, there is a time and a place for a warbly high note.
"Maybe This Time"? Maybe next time. While I appreciated the showiness of the note, I thought it totally killed the character of the song.
"Home"? NEVER. You have this beautiful augmented/diminished chord, Mercedes is shedding tears, there is a meaningful look with Quinn, and then the resolution into the major goodness ends with a RIDICULOUS high note that ruined the whole thing!!! Had she blended with the rest of the singers, I would have been crying all the way through the local news tag, the preview for next week, etc. As it stood, the minute she belted that crazy-ass note, my tears dried up and I nearly bled out my ears. YOU RUINED IT!
2) If you are going to let Kurt sing a beautiful tenor melody from Burt Bacharach, cut it short. Do not let this campy-lounge song take over 3 separate scenes! It was moody enough the first time, and while I enjoyed the exercise of Chris Colfer's magnificent range, I did not appreciate the recap by Kristin/Matt. SNORE!
I literally fell asleep through most of that montage, and still, on the third watching, I cannot tell you what happened.
3) Lastly, and I am saying this out of the goodness of my heart, if you are going to let Mercedes riff (and you know how I like a good riff), please do it on a song that is better in her range. "Everything" was a great choice lyric-wise, but the first half, when she was singing it straight, was awful. No vibrato in her voice, she was a tad flat, and it really had no power, until she was able to "Aretha" on it. If Amber is going to do a ballad, she needs to learn how to put subtle vibrato on it to jazz it up, before she releases the fury.
This is just vocal teacher 101, Ryan. Why didn't your music person work on this?
Anyway, Ryan. Thanks for listening. I hope the next episode is even better!
Love ya like a sista,
Me
or you can just not watch the show anymore for you not to be annoyed anymore, and we can all enjoy GLEE the way it is, after all you are a musician,do your own music in your own room or whatever home you are in. thank you!
ReplyDeleteI don't know what "Everything" is...I know in this last episode Amber sang "Beautiful" but as for an "Everything" I don't know.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I enjoyed the episode a lot. Kurt and Mercedes are two of my favourite characters, and this episode was awesome for that.
Also, I believe the not you are complaining about is called the "Cheno-note."
Anyway, I disagree with everything you said in this and I loved Glee this week.
Yeah I agree with the first 2 comments, if you don't like it don't watch it! Second, this was a great episode because it was showing that some of the characters don't feel at home yet, then at the end they start to. If all you are going to do is rant on how you don't like one episode then don't repeat how much you like it. If you didn't like it, you didn't like it. Whatever, and why did you watch it 3 times?! The music in this episode was AWESOME! I watch this show with my cousin every week and we didn't know the music but we still loved the episode. This is why the show is appealing to so many people of all ages, BECAUSE THEY CAN CONNECT TO THE MUSIC! So to repeat my self, if you don't like the show just don't watch it. Honestly, if you didn't like 1 episode out of 16 (I think this was the 16th ep so far) then that's pretty good.
ReplyDeleteIf you think you can do better at singing than they can, audition for the show.
ReplyDeleteI do not why you have to criticize a show like Glee. It is an amazing show and the storyline for this week was amazing one of the best plots all season and Mercedes hit "Beautiful" out of the park and the so called "Kristen note" that is annoying to you is beautiful and who she is and maybe you should leave your comments to yourself and leave Ryan Murphy alone because I am pretty sure he has more important things than to read letters to so called "musicians" telling how to do his job.
ReplyDeleteThis wasn't constructive criticism as you may have intended; it is a subjective critique of a particular artist's style that, while it has merit, should not have ruined the entire episode for you. Perhaps you need medication. And, as a musician myself, I found the homage to Barbara Streisand's arrangement/"mash-up" of A House Is Not A Home/One Less Bell To Answer moving and well produced. Note: (The Chris Colfer performance was just the former of the two songs)
ReplyDeleteMe and my friend agree, of all the Glee episodes this was the worst, the musical selection was not too great and the focus on matt/kristen was way to much. Get to the good stuff we only have 5 episodes left.
ReplyDeleteI agree with pretty much everybody. The site used to be so excited about Glee and I loved checking it everyday, but now all everyone does is complain about something. It is kind of annoying and I don't think I am going to go on this site anymore. Glee is the best thing that ever happened to tv and I don't want to just read complaints about it. I agree that the song selections were not at all great but can you please say this with constructive stuff too not just criticism? Sorry, but you just lost a fan.
ReplyDeletei agree with these comments. i really enjoy your site, but these last three "reviews" have turned me off completely.
ReplyDeletethis is a FAN site, after all. if you don't have anything NICE to say you really shouldn't say anything.
really, do whatever you want, but i won't be checking in anymore.
This week was fantastic! I understand if you don't like everything in an episode, but don't bash the entire thing because you are a "musician" and think you know better than the people working on Glee. Just want to point something out- they're working on the show and you're not, so obviously they are doing something right.
ReplyDeleteAs for Mercedes, she sang "Beautiful" not "Everything". Really, try to get your facts straight before you write about something. And the last song was a great ending for Ms. Chenoweth- and it wouldn't have been the same without her hitting the highest note she can.
I understand some fustration with plots, believe me, I get annoyed occasionally too- but don't bash the entire episode! If you think you know better go audition yourself.
Is the bashing really necessary?
ReplyDeleteIf you didn't like it, then why did you watched two more times?
I loved Home, it was great. I love Kristin Chenoweth and i think the Cheno note is a must, without it it'd be like having cereal without milk.
I really like this week songs, but i think including "Finn" in "A House Is Not A Home" ruined the song (at least for me).
I think we all had high expectations for the back nine, and i speak for myself when i say i'm a little disappointed, i feel like the plot is all over the place, and they're using too much auto-tune in some of the songs, which is kinda annoying. But overall, i still love Glee and i'll keep watching every week.
far out... stop whinging! this site was soo informative but i have moved on to gleefan.com becuase it has much more news about the actual show.. u dont even do the character profiles!
ReplyDeletedid u even know taht dijon talton and lea michele were in a relationship?
if i were you i would pull my finger out and realise that GLEE is the best show ever and if you dont like it live with it!
I TOTALLY disagree with bashing on the Cheno-note. Kristin Chenoweth is one of the most amazing singers ever and she can hit notes that i never though possible. She has more than a right to hit those notes when she is singing. So if you don't like it don't watch the show or at least don't watch the episodes with Kristin in them because if all your going to do is hate it then don't ruin what everybody else enjoys!
ReplyDeleteI loved that episode! I've always been bullied for being a little fat. Because of that I started telling my self that I wasn't pretty and that I'd never be as fit as those models in the magazines.I was running low on self-esteem. When I get bullied in school I always sing the song. Now I'm a few pounds lighter and I am no longer made fun of. Thank you Glee!
ReplyDeleteBut everyone has a right to their own opinion. :D
I love the fact that this site doesn't blindly love Glee, but has the nads to criticize!! It's always great to hear other people's opinions about stuff and gives you better insight. I don't want to sound like a bad Gleek, but I was bored through most of this episode. I really didn't give a damn about Kristin Chenoweth's character if it doesn't really contribute to the overall plot! Move on with Regionals!!! Come on, what's going on with the other characters [somebody's besides Rachel... god]
ReplyDeleteI did like that this put a spotlight on Mercedes and Kurt, although I was sad they didn't really do much about Mercedes' family background. I hope the next episode is better!! And they need to bring back Idina Menzel! Her three seconds on the show was not enough and she definitely needs to belt out a song or two
